Important does not mean guaranteed. These are original learning questions, not official JKBOSE items or predictions. Use them to test whether you can explain a concept, choose a formula, show units and connect evidence to a conclusion.
Before using any topic list as a final checklist, download the current Class 9 syllabus from the official JKBOSE website and confirm your session, division and school instructions.
Chemistry and matter
1. Convert temperature
Question: Convert 25 degrees Celsius to kelvin using the school-level relation K = degrees Celsius + 273.
Solution: 25 + 273 = 298 K. Kelvin is written without a degree symbol.
2. Separate a salt and sand mixture
Question: Describe a sequence for separating common salt from a mixture of salt and sand.
Answer guidance: Add water so the salt dissolves. Filter the mixture; sand remains as residue. Evaporate the filtrate or use crystallisation to recover the salt. The method uses a difference in solubility.
3. Form a chemical formula
Question: Magnesium forms Mg2+ ions and chlorine forms Cl- ions. Write the neutral compound formula.
Solution: One Mg2+ requires two Cl- ions to balance charge, so the formula is MgCl2.
Biology
4. Explain osmosis
Question: A peeled potato cup containing concentrated sugar solution is placed in water. Why can the liquid level inside rise?
Answer guidance: Water moves through selectively permeable cell membranes from the region with higher water concentration outside toward the more concentrated solution inside. This movement of water is osmosis.
5. Compare xylem and phloem
Question: State one main transport role of xylem and one of phloem.
Answer guidance: Xylem mainly carries water and dissolved minerals from roots. Phloem transports prepared food, especially sugars, from sources to tissues that use or store it.
6. Connect structure and function
Question: Why are nerve cells long and branched?
Answer guidance: Their extended shape helps transmit signals over distance, while branches help receive and connect with signals from multiple cells. A good answer connects the feature directly with communication.
Motion, force and energy
7. Calculate speed
Question: A student runs 150 m in 30 s. Find average speed.
Solution: Speed = distance/time = 150/30 = 5 m/s.
8. Calculate acceleration
Question: A vehicle's velocity changes uniformly from 5 m/s to 20 m/s in 3 s. Find acceleration.
Solution: a = (v - u)/t = (20 - 5)/3 = 15/3 = 5 m/s2.
9. Distinguish mass and weight
Question: Find the weight of a 2 kg object where g = 9.8 m/s2. What happens to its mass if it is moved to a place with a different gravitational field?
Solution: Weight W = mg = 2 × 9.8 = 19.6 N. Its mass remains 2 kg; weight changes when gravitational field strength changes.
10. Calculate kinetic energy
Question: Find the kinetic energy of a 4 kg object moving at 3 m/s.
Solution: KE = 1/2 mv2 = 1/2 × 4 × 9 = 18 J.
Sound and scientific reasoning
11. Use echo travel time
Question: An echo returns 0.20 s after a sound is made. If sound speed is 340 m/s, find the distance to the reflecting surface.
Solution: The sound travels to the surface and back, so distance to the surface = vt/2 = 340 × 0.20 / 2 = 34 m.
12. Design a fair test
Question: A student wants to test whether light affects the growth direction of seedlings. Name the variable changed, one variable to control and one observation to record.
Answer guidance: Change the direction or availability of light. Control a factor such as plant type, water, soil, age or temperature. Record the direction or angle of shoot growth over a fixed time. A fair test changes one main factor while holding others as constant as practical.
How to review your attempt
| Error type | Example | Repair action |
|---|---|---|
| Concept | Confusing mass with weight | Write a two-column comparison and explain one example |
| Formula | Not dividing echo distance by two | Draw the outward and return path before substituting |
| Unit | Writing kg for weight | Add a final unit check to every numerical |
| Explanation | Naming osmosis without describing movement | State what moves, through what, and in which direction |
| Method | Evaporating the mixture before filtering sand | Link each separation step to the property it uses |
